8th Principle Workshop – ZOOM EVENT

In response to the Corona virus crisis the workshop will now take place on Zoom. It has been a scramble to reorganize it and details are not completely in place.

We will update this post as more is known. For Zoom questions please contact Kecia McMillian by phone or email. Tentatively the workshop is now from 9:30am-1:00pm.

As a first step toward the UUFN considering adoption of the Eighth Principle there will be a workshop on Saturday, March 21, 2020 from 9:30am-1:00pm.

Recently an Eighth Principle has been proposed for adoption by the Unitarian Universalist Association which reads as:
“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

The proposed principle was inspired by a hiring controversy for a high level UUA position in 2017 (See https://www.uuworld.org/articles/critics-challenge-uua-hiring-practices) and led to the resignation of then president of the UUA Peter Morales (https://www.uuworld.org/articles/peter-morales-resigns) as well as several other high ranking UUA employees.

As a result of this event many UUs decided that not enough was being done to rid the Unitarian Universalist Association of implicit biases and white privilege. The Eighth Principle was proposed to make it explicitly part of the covenant that Unitarian Universalists live by. Along with working to have the UUA adopt the eighth principle, the proposers are asking the member congregations to adopt the Eighth Principle themselves.

If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact Kecia McMillian or John Pesek.
