Buddhism teaches that nothing exists of itself. This idea is contained within the descriptive phrase contingent (or dependent) co-arising. With this assertion in mind I begin pondering how the idea of the Bodhisattva, and the Heart Sutra which extols such beings, might appear in the early teachings of the Buddha. Further, do these ideas continue to speak to us today?
