July’s Share the Plate recipient is The Inn Project
The Inn Project is a volunteer-run initiative that helps asylum-seeking and refugee families who are coming out of detention at the southwest border to reconnect with their loved ones from across the country. The project was initiated in 2016 by two United Methodist churches in Arizona at the request of ICE to provide shelter for these vulnerable families most of whom are from Central America. Since then, other area churches have answered the call, helping to provide meals, hygiene and bedding necessities, warm clothing, and other miscellaneous travel needs. When contact with the refugee’s extended family is secured, churches coordinate transportation so they may join their families. Our thanks to Barbara Gates, who volunteers for the project through her Tucson UU church, for bringing this important initiative to our attention. More information is at www.theinnumc.org.
