Each month UUFN shares the donations collected at our Sunday Service with a local charity or a charity we feel is addressing a special situation currently in the news. For the month of January 2019, UUFN will be sharing their plate with Project New Start.
Project New Start is a re-entry program for Delaware men and women transitioning out of state and federal prisons. Participants spend 10 weeks together learning cognitive behavioral change, parenting, financial literacy, conflict resolution and technology training. Working in partnership with a wide variety of local organizations, the program has proven highly effective: more than 90% of New Start graduates are placed in jobs and their rate of recidivism (return to prison) is less than 30%, a stark contrast to Delaware’s average recidivism rate of 76%. We use the host of beautiful deep readings at the rear of our hymnal, Singing the Living Tradition, less and less frequently. Today’s service hopes to reverse that trend by highlighting selections that address the idea of our Seventh Principle. We will explore them together.
