What is not to love about May? Holidays, and holydays, flowers and Flower Communion Sunday, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day connected in celebration and a desire for peace, all in one month! When I was a child, I attended annual May novenas honoring the Blessed Mother Mary, Queen of Heaven, and asked, in nine consecutive nights of ritual prayer, for her intercession to bring peace to our war-torn world. Now, as a mature adult, I still pray for peace, but understand that intercession will only come through our love for one another and for humanity – an unselfish love. Unselfish love is a love that serves others while it heals and transforms everyone it touches, including those of us who are doing the loving. Images of a divine, loving, compassionate mother abound in most cultures, heralding the way to peace. May we feel the presence of maternal love in all aspects of our life and compassionate prayers and service for peace.
