The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark began as an extension of the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington in 1955 and was incorporated as an independent group that October. As our numbers increased, the congregation purchased 3.5 acres of wooded land and designed and built a glass-walled meeting place. A second building, for Religious Education, was built in 1969. Our latest expansion, completed in 1992, doubled our capacity. The Fellowship was lay-led from 1955 to 1969 when we called our first minister, Rev. Robert Hemstreet, who served the congregation from 1969 to 1975. The congregation was again lay-led from 1975 to 1985. Rev. Louise Robeck was confirmed as extension minister in 1986, installed as our settled minister in June 1990, and served until 1995. Rev. Michael Boblett was our interim minister from 1996 to 1997 when we settled our new minister, Rev. Greg Chute. We recognize the value of this professional leadership, while acknowledging and accepting the opportunities and responsibilities of an involved, supportive, and committed congregation.
