Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity in Newark that fits into your already busy schedule? Consider Hope Dining Room. Hope provides a noontime meal for all who are hungry – no questions asked. It is located in the basement of the Kingswood United Methodist Church on the corner of Marrows Road and Brookside Boulevard, and is served by various churches in our community. UUFN provides the meal on the fourth Thursday of every month except November. (Hope is closed on Thanksgiving Day.) You can help out once, twice, or sign on for life!! The crew is established on a month-to-month basis. Want to help out? Here are the possibilities:
PREPARATION: Approximately 9:45 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Spend a couple of hours chopping veggies, browning ground beef, mixing salad, counting plates, filling ice buckets, and plating desserts with a crew of about four highly entertaining UUers. No experience necessary! Bring a hat, or wear one of our attractive on-site hats.
INSIDE SERVER: 11:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Be one of three UUFNers to dish out sloppy joes, corn, or salad. After a brief (about 60 seconds) training session, you will be the master of the serving spoon, and know the difference between a “first” and a “second.” Bring a hat, or wear one provided. You will also be wearing gloves for this task.
OUTSIDE SERVER – DRINKS: 11:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Drinks are prepared ahead of time by the Hope Dining Room permanent staff, so all you have to do is remove them from the fridge and roll them out on the cart. Then meander through the dining room taking orders for and serving water, iced tea, lemonade, or milk. All guests remain at their tables and raise their hands when they need something. This job is usually covered by one or two UU’s.
OUTSIDE SERVER – FOOD: 11:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Deliver lunch plates from the serving window to our guests, who remain at their tables. After your 60-second training session, you will know the difference between a “first” and a “second!” You may also be asked to take around a dessert tray. We like to have six people for this job.
DISHWASHER: Approximately 11:15 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. You’ll be washing pans, cutting boards, trays, knives, and serving spoons in a not quite state-of-the-art kitchen…but with the best dishwashing liquid money can buy!
DESSERT PICK-UP AND DELIVERY: The day before our service, visit Panera on Main Street at 8:55 p.m. to collect their donations. Then deliver all these to Hope on Thursday morning before 11:30 a.m.
If you are not one of the lucky UUFN retirees, or you have a boss who expects you to work on Thursdays, you can still help out by donating to the cause. Just drop a check into the Sunday offering with “Hope Dining Room” on the memo line. If you would like to be on the Hope Dining Room Volunteers e-mail list, contact Janet Louis.
